This album features two different musical partnerships. Barbara and I have been exploring the colors and subtle delicacies of French music for nearly a decade together, deepening and expanding our color palette, and refining our interpretation as Duo Deja Vu. With Jose I have had adventures on and off stage, exploring new worlds and styles, and traveling to Cuba as guest artists at the Cello Festival of Havana. I cannot thank these two enough for their contribution to this project and for trusting me to wear also the hat of producer. While the primary impulse for this album is to give voice to vibrantly colorful music, it was in the streets of Havana that I was struck by the power that music has, like water, to flow over political and cultural boundaries. I began to notice threads of connection between French music and Latin American music, styles that we might imagine live in their own separate spheres. In Cuba I found myself confronted with the dark legacy of slavery and imperialism, but also a story of resilience and cultural exchange with shared rhythms and harmonies. This recording builds a musical bridge between styles, cultures and partnerships.
